What is Patchouli?

The sensual fragrance of patchouli comes from the leaves of a plant, where the essential oil is extracted through a process called distillation. While some of our soaps are made with fragrance oils, we have chosen to incorporate patchouli essential oil in this particular selection. This way, you can take full advantage of the sensual, exotic properties of patchouli – rich and earthy with a floral sweetness.

During the sixties, patchouli was a popular choice in perfume oils and incense. However, the fragrance has been around for centuries. In the East Indies, patchouli was used to repel moths and was sprinkled in shipping containers filled with Asian silk and cashmere sent to Europe. The plant was also used as an herb to add flavor to foods.

Patchouli has a reputation as an aphrodisiac and is used as anointing oil during Tantric sexual practices. The fragrance of patchouli is not only associated with love, but is also linked to money. In some aromatherapy circles, the scent of the plant is believed to attract a wealthy companion. Possessing therapeutic properties, the essential oil is used as an antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, and antiseptic.
